Families warned about the WORST times to travel this Easter

Last modified on Wednesday 5 April 2023

Many of us can't wait to get away this Easter, but be aware of the travel chaos predicted before you set off so you can avoid the worst times to travel

If you're planning on taking a trip with the family over the Easter break, then you'll need to know what the roads have in store for you before you set off.

And luckily, experts have revealed exactly what to expect when hitting the road, as 17 million of us are set to travel over Easter weekend.

According to experts, there are long delays expected over the bank holiday throughout Britain, and some motorways are even predicted to see more than twice the amount of traffic as usual.

Adding to the chaos, railway works including London's Euston station being shut means more families will be driving.

The times NOT to travel this Easter

Experts from the RAC have revealed the very worst time for families to travel is on 7 April, Good Friday , between 10am and 4pm, as 2.65million of us are planning to travel.

Drivers should also avoid the road on Saturday, 8 April between 11am and 2pm, as 2.32 million drivers will be set to travel.

And 9 April, Easter Sunday , is looking just as hectic as Good Friday, with the worst chaos predicted between 11am and 1pm.

Sadly, Bank Holiday Monday isn't looking much better, with 2.32 million drivers set to head off between 10am and 5pm.

'We’re expecting the customary jams'

Rod Dennis from the RAC said: 'We’re expecting the customary jams across parts of the road network to make this Good Friday a bad Friday for drivers, especially those who are planning on covering longer distances.

'Traffic volumes could be even higher if the sun chooses to make a welcome appearance.

'The south and west of the UK are the areas to watch as they’re home to some vital roads responsible for carrying vast numbers of people to the holiday destinations of the West Country.

'Our advice to anyone heading that way is to get on the road as early as possible on Good Friday, or travel on a different day entirely.'

Easter weekend forecast

Meanwhile, there's better news in store in terms of the weather over the Easter weekend.

According to the Met Office, families are predicted to enjoy bright sunny spells and dry conditions over most areas on Saturday.

However, if you live in the far west, you might be hit with some thicker cloud and rain in certain areas.

The lovely weather is predicted to continue throughout Sunday and Easter Monday, although there may be some rain on the way, and strong winds are possible for the west.

'Pleasant by day'

Helen Caughey, the Met Office's deputy chief meteorologist, said: 'It will be drier by the start of the Easter break, with bright, clear spells and light winds in most places.

'Although there will be some chilly nights it will be pleasant by day with sunny spells and some light winds, though on paper temperatures will be around average for the time of year.

'While there is still some uncertainty in the detailed forecast for Easter Sunday and Monday the general trend is for fine weather in the south and east while it looks like it could turn more unsettled in the north and west. Fairly typical spring weather for us.'
