Vaginal discharge during pregnancy: what's normal and what's not?

Last modified on Tuesday 3 May 2022

One of the less pleasant symptoms when you're expecting a baby is increased vaginal discharge. But what's normal and what's not? We take an oh-so delightful look at some examples that may appear throughout your pregnancy.

Yes, we all know that discharge isn't pleasant. Even the name of it is enough to make you wince (ew, discharge!).

But when you're pregnant you'll actually be glad to see it. Why? Because, according to the NHS , healthy vaginal discharge actually helps prevent infections travelling up your vagina towards the baby. Who knew!

What does normal pregnancy discharge look like?

But what does healthy discharge look like? As a rule of thumb, the healthy kind:

  • is clear or white and milky
  • doesn't smell
  • doesn't cause itching down there

Discharge that doesn't fit the above criteria could be signs of a yeast or vaginal infection. And anything that's pink or blood-tinged could (although not always) be a sign that something's wrong.

Of course, ALWAYS get any unusual or concerning discharge checked out by your GP. They'll have seen it all before and it's never worth taking any risks during pregnancy.

In the meantime, have a scroll through our gallery to see examples of normal and not so normal pregnancy discharge ... you're welcome!
