Martin Lewis issues petrol warning

Last modified on Tuesday 18 April 2023

The money expert has urged Tesco customers to make use of the supermarket's petrol stations before a change comes in on 14 June

Financial journalist Martin Lewis has hit families with yet another money saving warning, this time to do with their Tesco Clubcards.

Martin has urged any card holders to make use of the supermarket's petrol stations as much as they can between now and 14 June before a big change comes in.

The move means Clubcard holders will earn just 1 point for every 2 litres of fuel bought. By comparison, card holders can currently earn 1 point for every £2 spent on fuel.

'More money spent for less points'

With the average price of 2 litres of unleaded currently sitting at £2.90 according to RAC (and £3.20) for diesel, Clubcard users will need to spend more filling up their car to get the same amount of points.

That is, assuming fuel prices stay higher than £1 per litre until the change arrives.

Having said this, if fuel costs do go below £1 per litre, customers will actually receive more points when the new scheme comes in.

The move will affect all Tesco Petrol filling stations, as well as Tesco Bank customers using their credit cards as a Clubcard to earn points and fill their vehicles.

However, Esso stations with a Tesco Express will not be affected as customers cannot earn Clubcard points from buying fuel there.

Home delivery change

This isn't the only change Tesco has made recently for shoppers.

The retail giant will introduce a new minimum delivery charge for customers shopping for home deliveries from 2 May.

Tesco shoppers were also left unhappy with the retailer for lowering the value of Clubcard vouchers from this summer.

And, families were also annoyed with new rules which make Clubcard points worth less for family days out.

Nectar Card change

In more positive news, Sainsbury's has recently made a welcome change to its loyalty card scheme.

The retail giant has overhauled its Nectar card scheme to give discounts to even more shoppers.
