It can be tricky for parents to know what foods to feed their baby, especially when it's time to start weaning. We've got some top tips for introducing fruit and veg into the little ones' diets to help you out.

Weaning can be a testing time for babies and parents. Your baby is starting to discover new textures, tastes and develop their own palate ... expect a lot of mess!

We should all be aiming to 'eat a rainbow', which basically means making sure we've got a variety of fruit and vegetables in our meals.

Having more natural colours in our food can help lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and contributes to our goal of having five pieces of fruit or veg everyday . According to the Eat Well Guide , a third of our diets should be fruits and vegetables, so how do we introduce these foods to our babies?

We've put together some tips for getting your baby to eat a rainbow, so that you can be confident they're getting all the goodness they need from their food.

1. Plan a list of fruit and vegetables to try

We all know there are loads of fruits and veggies of different colours, but thinking of them on the spot can be hard, so come up with a list before you start blending, mashing and pureeing.

It may be best to list each colour of the rainbow and then a fruit or veg of that colour that you could easily prepare.

For example …

Red – tomatoes, red pepper, strawberries, raspberries, watermelon

Orange and yellow – butternut squash, pumpkin, sweetcorn, lentils, apricots

Green – spinach, broccoli, courgette, cucumbers, peas, apples, avocado

Blue and purple – blueberries, cabbage, aubergine, plums

2. Buy what's on offer

There's a common misconception that fresh fruit and veg is really expensive, but it doesn't have to be when you're savvy with your supermarket.

Everyone loves bagging a bargain, but some supermarkets make it a bit easier than others to eat the rainbow by having regular discounts on fruit and veg.

Aldi have offers on their Super 6 fruit and vegetables in store every week, so you can shop amazing low prices while getting a great range of fresh fruit and veg – what more could you want?

3. Eat what they're eating

You spend ages preparing a wonderful weaning meal for your baby, only for them to completely ignore it and want what you've got on your plate instead. Typical.

But if you're eating the same foods as them, they've got nothing to compare their meal to!

If you've given them some broccoli, it could be a great idea to also have broccoli on your plate so they're more likely to try it.

4. Accept a bit of ready-made help

We know a lot of new parents want to make most of their baby's food from scratch, but there's nothing wrong with relying on weaning food that's ready to go sometimes – life is busy, give yourself a break!

The 100% Organic Mamia baby food from Aldi is suitable for babies aged 4 months and over, and includes purée pouches, fruit pots and meals – all with no added sugar.

With flavours like Mango, Apple & Banana, Sweet Potato, Butternut Squash, and Apple and Blueberry, there's bound to be a flavour combination your little one loves.

5. Make fruit and veg fun

A bit of creativity goes a long way when it comes to meal times, even for adults.

Why not add a story to the food? Is that a broccoli floret on the plate or a tree in a forest?

Or try to present the food in a way that will engage your baby, like strips of courgette to look like hair around a veggie face.

They won't mind tucking into your masterpiece if they're having fun with it!
