Hi,

I am just looking for some advice/support

my 20 month old seems to be hitting most milestones on paper e.g gross and fine motor skills but I do have some concerns about his social development. He interacts sometimes and plays peek a bo, and joins in with lots of nursery rhymes but some days he is very reluctant to listen or answer his name and his speech is a little behind ( he has about 10 words and sometimes uses them in the right context like ‘up’ ‘down’ when pointing but also just randomly babbles a lot with random words) he also does tend to avoid eye contact unless it’s on his terms and can seem quite distant unless he wants to engage.

i seem to be getting so much autism content on social media and everything seems to be a red flag.. like playing laying on the floor, hand leading and tip toeing ( which he does sometimes)

i can’t seem to stop worrying about it at the minutes and it’s so consuming, I have family members with asd so it isn’t unknown to me or overt scary …but I feel so lost and can’t get a hold of my anxiety.

im not sure if I should go to the GP or if this seems normal?

Hi Mrs G,

Thank you for posting.

It is positive to hear you LO is reaching most of his milestones. It is very normal for LOs to not reach all of their milestones at the same time, for some they need some extra time compared to some of their peers.

You may find Children's language development and parenting advice - BBC Tiny Happy People helpful in looking at ways to support your LOs social and communication skills.

He is still very young so he has lots of time to have opportunities to develop his skills as well as his personality (his likes and dislikes).

Autism is much more talked about and it is great to have the knowledge and understanding which we may not have had in previous years. However, this has caused anxieties in many parents as some of the 'traits and signs' of autism are also very typical behaviours in young children and can be normal for children's development.

Your LO will be having a 2 year developmental review with the health visiting team anywhere between the ages of 2 years and 2 1/2 years. However, if you feel you would like to discuss this further you can always give them a call. They may be able to see your LO a little bit earlier for an assessment if they feel this is appropriate.

I hope this helps in someway and you are able to speak to your health visitor soon

Best wishes
