Moms out there, who else has had to deal with their son having wet dreams?

My 13 year old had his first wet dream this weekend. We talked earlier this year a little bit about what they are and thet they are normal. But having no first hand experience with them, I have a lot of questions. Trying to be better prepared to help out him and myself. How often do they occur? Are they very messy? His first one seemed to produce much more of a stain than I expected. Should I invest in extra bed sheets and pajamas/underwear? What’s the best clothing for him to sleep in that will minimize clean up? Does he need to shower after each one or just wipe up? Is there any sleep tips that would prevent a wet dream? I read somewhere sleeping on his stomach could cause friction with the mattress.

Ugh so much to wonder about and I’m freaking out a lil bit. Any boy moms, what was your experience with your sons?

Hi there, not sure if this will be something that you want to hear, but, the best way to combat wet dreams is for your son to masturbate frequently. Wet dreams are mainly caused from too much buildup or from "sexy dreams". If he ejaculates often it will very highly decrease the chance of a wet dream, especially so if he does it before going to bed.

Hope this helps, all the best keeping those sheets clean ;)

Good advice! Thank you Rachel! Eek I didn’t want to think about masturbation for my little boy. He’s still very much a kid in my eyes, but we may be getting ready to approach that topic. I planned on having that discussion at some point in the teenage years. I was going to wait to see how frequent the wet dreams occur. If they get to be a constant issue, I would think about having that talk. So far he’s having 1-2 a week. I didn’t realize boys get a build up but it makes sense. I’ve heard men need to “clean out the pipes” every so often. Maybe the build up explains why the ejaculation volume was so large. There’s been some messy sheets and pajamas! I thought about buying him some moisture wicking underwear or shorts to sleep in. That they may help contain things. Not sure how to explain to my son tho, hey I bought you this new underwear to sleep in to help control your ejaculations 🙈 Would love any and all suggestions to help! Don’t mind washing underwear/pajamas but trying to keep things a little less messy so we don’t have to change the sheets as often.

I had wet dreams often when I was growing up. I fall asleep on the couch I’d have them. My mom was not very patient with the situation and she was very direct and open. She told me that I needed to stop leaving a mess all over. She gave me some lotion and a small towel and told me to masturbate if I get the urge when I wanted. It helped a lot. I don’t know if you can be as direct but some times you have to be. I’m getting close to having the same talk with my son.

So far he’s only had them occur in his bed at night. I don’t mind the mess and extra laundry. Although it is awkward to the stains!

I can tell he’s a little embarrassed about having them and that he can’t control it but I’ve told him it’s just a natural release. Hopefully as his hormones calm down the volume will lessen.
