I previously had a domestic violence relationship and my son had to go stay with his father, this man is now locked up and is awaiting trial, as of begginging January … I also I’ve just found out I’m 10 weeks pregnant ( one night stand ) and I’m panicking that social services may take my child when it’s born. I’ve done all my work with DAP and have regained a brilliant relationship with my sons dad and my son again but I’m worried they may think I can’t safeguard my new child ?? What could happened please as I’m so worried 😩 the risk is gone as the perpetrator of the abuse has being remanded and is looking at a decent charge. I’ve protected myself and my property as much as possible and have even fled my home and moved home

As long as you stay away from him, there's no risk. They won't take your baby, doesn't work like that. SS remove children from parents who refuse to work with them, don't show change or understand the risks. From what you've said, that isn't the case for you. So unless something major happens (you get into another dv relationship, start taking drugs or drinking heavy etc) I think you will be just fine.

Hi Megan

I am a family solicitor and regularly represent parents in cases involving Social Services.

I am sorry to hear that you are worried about Social Services’ involvement with your unborn baby and it is completely understandable. I of course do not know your specific circumstances however it is really important to be open and honest with Social Services and to work with them. It is really positive that you have recognised the risks and completed some domestic abuse work. It sounds like you are in a better position now than you were previously.

Social Services may wish to complete an assessment in respect of your unborn baby and it would be important to engage with this. Although it would include a search of all records which will form part of the family history, if it does not really relate to what is going on for you at the moment, then it will simply be recorded and then any current issues looked at. This happens in all assessments.

It is usually a good idea to work openly and honestly with Social Services when they are doing their assessment as showing you can cooperate with professionals will put you in the best position possible.

I do hope all goes well.

All the best,

Lauren

SS only remove children in a very small amount of severe abuse/neglect cases where there is no alternative.

The threshold is extremely high and children in clearly abusive and neglectful circumstances have not been removed.
