1. See the Flying Scotsman at the Railway Museum in York
As part of its centenary celebrations, Flying Scotsman will be at the National Railway Museum in York this April. Visit the museum for a rare chance to see the world's most famous steam engine; a perfect day out for train lovers young and old. Discover the human stories behind the legend, with a special centenary exhibition called Flying Scotsman: 100 Years, 100 Voices on display from 10 February. Travel back in time and witness the locomotive's greatest moments with Flying Scotsman VR, also available at the museum in April.

2. Take a trip on Flying Scotsman at Keighley and Worth Valley Railway
There’s always carriage-loads of fun on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway; and it's even more impressive this May with Flying Scotsman taking to the rails as part of the famous locomotive's centenary year. The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway is a unique, five-mile branch line railway set in the heart of West Yorkshire, running heritage steam and diesel trains from the industrial landscape of Keighley to the stunning Brontë Country of Oxenhope.

3. Avon Valley Railway, Gloucestershire
The whole family will enjoy the 6-mile round trip on Avon Valley Railway. Steam and diesel engines will take you through beautiful West Country landscapes from Bitton station through Oldland Common and Avon Riverside. And you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea in the station buffet, which is open daily; or travel on a special dining train with afternoon tea, or even fish and chips on board; or take a picnic to the dedicated area at Avon Riverside Station and watch steam and diesel trains trundle across the girder bridge. Look out, too, for special events throughout the year.

4. Ruislip Lido Railway, Hillingdon, London
Ruislip Lido Railway is a cute, miniature railway that runs from the Waters Edge pub in Ruislip to a little play area and back. The journey itself is about 11 minutes long and makes for a nice gentle ride through the trees that your train-mad kids will love. The play area includes a man-made beach, slides, swings and climbing frames. Don't miss the Easter and Santa Specials.

5. Dartmouth Steam Railway, Paignton, Devon
If your kids are mad about trains and boats, they'll love a day out with the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company. The steam train runs 7 miles down the beautiful Devon coastline while the river boats cruise gently down the River Dart. Book a Round Robin, and enjoy a full-day excursion – a steam train trip, ferry crossing, river cruise and a bus ride - phew! A great day out for the whole family.

7. Day Out with Thomas at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, Aylesbury

8. Roar with the Brickosaurs on the Severn Valley Railway
Get ready for a roarsome display on as BrickLive brings Brickosaurs to The Engine House on the Severn Valley Railway this May half term. Take a tour around the Highley visitor centre and travel back thousands of years to see Velociraptors, Diplocaulus, Ankylosaur, a trio of Archaeoceratops and much more – made from more than 500,000 lego bricks. 11. Railworld Wildlife Haven, Cambridgeshire

12. London Transport Museum
Kids of all ages will love the London Transport Museum, which offers so many fantastic ways to play as you learn about trains, and the many other forms of transport that carry people around London. There's the chance to sit inside older train carriages; find out about the world's first underground railway; learn how railways transformed London's suburbs; and even practise 'driving' a tube train.

13. Great Central Railway, Leicestershire
Running for eight miles from Loughborough to Leicester, Great Central Railway is the UK's only mainline steam railway. Thomas the Tank Engine visits a few times a year so check the website to see when he's next due. Peep peep!

14. Ormesby Hall, Middlesbrough
Venture into the servants' wing at the National Trust's Ormsby Hall and you'll hear the familiar noise of trains. Follow the sound and you'll find two permanent model railway layouts: Corfe Castle, and an interactive children's layout. The Corfe Castle model is set in the early 1920s and depicts Corfe Castle Station and an imaginary village, made to scale from card models of various buildings in the surrounding area. Kids will love the interactive layout with four circuits of track and buttons to push to make the trains move.

15. Locomotion, County Durham
Shildon, County Durham, is the world's first railway town, and a sure-fire hit with any young fans of trains, railways and engineering. It's a really interactive museum with the chance to play with train tables, build towers, listen to stories and sounds, and watch model trains. Look out for the train-themed cafe, or take a picnic which you can enjoy inside or outside. And don't miss the locomotive-themed play area outside if the weather's good!

16. Echills Wood Railway, Kingsbury, Warwickshire

28. Ulster Transport Museum
The Irish Railway Collection in the railway gallery at Cultra houses 40 full-size railway vehicles and buildings covering Ireland’s rich railway history.
