Hi,

my 1 year old doesn’t really get a lot of interaction with other babies. Mostly because I don’t know any mums, so I started taking him to a sensory class when he was 8 months.

he was never interested in the class. He didn’t want to watch any of the signing and dancing or interact with kids. He will just climb on top of me and cry.

i kept taking him though as I thought he just needs to get used to it. With no luck.

i now have a friend with a child, 6 months older. That came over a few days ago for a little play date. And my little one just wants to play alone. Wasn’t really interested in playing or interacting with her.

I don’t think he is autistic. He’s 12 months (almost walking), playing with all his toys. Saying mama. If you show him how to use a toy, he will copy you no problem.

is this normal? Him just wanting to quietly play in his bedroom with me or his dad.

Hi Justyna

I'm Catherine, one of the Parent Supporters here at Netmums. Thank you for reaching out and sharing.

You've mentioned that 'He’s 12 months (almost walking), playing with all his toys. Saying mama. If you show him how to use a toy, he will copy you no problem'. It certainly sounds as if your little one is doing really well. Play is something kids will pick up and learn as time goes on. It can be really normal for kids to feel more comfortable playing with their parents or even playing side by side with other little ones, rather than playing together. All kids are different and I wonder if you might like to have a read at this article about play : How and when do babies develop social skills? | Baby & toddler articles & support | NCT

It can be hard to meet other mums but baby groups are a great place to start. Sometimes, local libraries run free groups or perhaps your health visitor might be able to signpost you to community groups in your area? Netmums also have a board where lots of local groups are advertised. I'll link it here in case you would like to have a local: The best stay and play baby and toddler groups near you - Netmums

Hopefully some of our lovely community will be along soon to offer support.

Take care

Catherine
