I'm 32 weeks so I'm starting to panic about things like this. I'm quite a big woman (size 22) with 44H boobs that hang low and nipples that point downwards. I'm mostly worried about if I'll be able to breastfeed properly?

I wasn't too concerned until a friend of mine who's recently had a baby said I'm going to find it really difficult. She's only slim with a small chest and says she's already struggling holding her baby up. She thinks my boobs are far too big and hang too low to breastfeed easily and it'd be easier if i was her size. Apparently I should probably consider bottle feeding.

As you can imagine I'm feeling a bit upset and apprehensive now. I just can't see how it will work without me suffocating the baby. And how will he latch on?

Can anyone explain if it'll be possible or put me at ease. I really want to be able to breastfeed, but should i really bottle feed instead?

Hello Laura

Boobs come in shapes and sizes and this does not dictate who can and who can't feed.

Ladies worry that their boobs are too small or too big, perhaps their nipples are the wrong shape or inverted. Some ladies have had surgery and other perhaps abnormalities etc, but whatever the situation help is always at hand.

I am sure your friend was well meaning, but what has been suggested really isn't certain at all.

I think the best thing you can do is have a chat with your own Midwife and allow them to understand your worries and give you the best advice they can. Your Midwifery team and your HV team will be very available to you once your LO is here to support you with the feeding journey.

I do hope this helps Laura

Best wishes

Tracey HV

Please don’t worry about this. I have very big saggy boobs and have breastfed two children without any difficulty. There are so many different breastfeeding positions you can try and different things work for different people. I found my local La Leche League very helpful- I didn’t go to any meet-ups but the facebook group for the local group was really good. See if there’s one in your area.

Was it rugby that worked for you? I've since learnt that having boobs like ours can make it easier in some cases.

I'll look into that thanks, hopefully it'll encourage and reassure me more

Thanks Hannah, matching sizes too! Geez 5, you must've been breastfeeding for quite a few years? I'd love to have a big family like that, but we'll see how this first one goes xx

Hi. Please don't worry. I'm a 44J & I fed all 3 of mine with no problem at all. Get yourself a good breastfeeding pillow, brilliant for taking some of the strain off your neck/back & I used to have baby on there & feed really easily.

Hope all goes well for you x

Rugby hold was helpful. Also the advantage we have over our smaller breasted friends is that the boob goes down to the baby; you don’t have to hold the baby up so much! I use one arm to hold the baby and the other hand to support my boob.

Thanks for the link, I've just had a read through. Yeah I guess we may the advantage! It turns out some women don't have to hold their baby at all as their boobs hang low enough to feed them on their lap or pillow next to them. That whole 'tummy to mummy' advice definitely doesn't seem right for us at least does it

Honestly, it’s easy peasy. I hated my boobs till I had children then suddenly they had a purpose and I really appreciated them! Don’t worry about it, you’ll be grand.

Thanks Natalie, I'll make sure I get one of those pillows. Wouldn't be surprised if I was your size by the time i start breastfeeding! Like Sarah said, it sounds like it may actually be easier with larger boobs x

Hopefully it is for me! I'm sure I won't care how they look as long as I can nurse easily. The other thing that bothered me is will i have a hard time latching them on with very large nipples? They were big before, but they've changed grown and darkened so much with pregnancy

Honestly, I wouldn’t worry. If you think of the size of the teat on a baby bottle your nipples are probably not bigger than that. You should have help when you’ve delivered from the midwives and care assistants on the ward. When you’re discharged you should have regular visits for the first week from a midwife at home. If you are having any problems feeding then either they will help or they will refer you to someone who can. You’ve got this!

That's my problem, I'm a worrier just in case you hadn't noticed haha! I've always been the same. Honestly I'd say now they're a similar size to the teats on a baby bottle yes, this is my problem! My partner has picked up on it too, not in a negative way though. Hopefully they won't think I'm some freak when I'm there, I'll die of embarassment if I start struggling in front of them. Thanks for your support though, it means a lot!
