My parents have always been funny about talking about money. They were horrified when I went to uni an they had to add their income to the form for student finance! That was the first time I knew what either of them earnt.

Me and my friends talk about what we earn/spend/owe all the time. is this just a generational thing or are my parents just a bit odd?

To give a bit of perspective, I'm 53, and my parents always talked about money. Even at 5 years old I knew how much my dad earned, and my mum used to involve me in the household budgeting to help me with my maths at school.

I was the same with my son.

Even back then there were families who were open about money, and ones where one partner (usually the wife) had absolutely no idea how much the other one earned. Looking back, in general, the open about money families seemed a bit happier.

No one ever mentions money in my family, I have no idea what my parents earned or what my siblings earn. It has always been a taboo subject-as if you would be boasting-silly really, none of us are rich, all have normal houses and cars so nothing to hide-that I know of!?
