Hi, Sorry this is long winded but I'm trying to give as much info as possible in the hope someone might have some good advice for me......PLEASE HELP....

My 3.5 year old son started getting spots with the slight appearance of bites back in Nov. 2011. He first had a couple of spots on his chest then a few more which over a 10 day period developed into what looked a bit like mild chicken pox (without the hard core/scab) all over his body - each spot would start off a little red which would get redder by day 2 and have a very small pin prick of a head (never busting or getting pustular) and then fade to nothing by about day 5-6. I took him to the Dr's at the time and was given's some AB's which seemed to work. He then started to get the odd spot 2-3 weeks later, just a couple at a time then as the weeks went by they seemed to increase but never to the extent of a complete rash appearance and mainly on his arms and legs. When I went back to the Dr's they convinced me it was probably bites. We do not have pets and his mattress is less then 2 years old. I wasn't convinced but treated his room as if he had bed bugs. Within 2 weeks he stated to get more spots which seemed to be more around his pant line and tops of legs/buttocks. He sweats a lots if slightly hot when sleeping so I wondered if it might be related so reduced what he wears to sleep in which seemed to stop the spots for up to 3 weeks. About 5 days ago he started with a couple of spots again on his chest which have now spread to his thighs, outer buttocks, legs and arms - looking more like a rash again. He has developed a mild cough this time but approx 1-2 day after the rash started. My younger son has also broken out in a similar rash this time with no other symptoms - milder but very similar in appearance. My younger son also had a separate outbreak mid Jan, which resolved untreated within a week.
My gut feeling is that this is a viral response to something. Both children are quite well within themselves and when I took them back to the Dr's yesterday she told me she didn't know what it was but not to worry. My concern is that my eldest has got something viral and has had it since Nov and now my youngest has it. Would any one else be concerned at this stage? Should I push to get my children investigated further or just ride it out as rashes are often difficult to diagnose and because both children are generally fit and well??? All advice gratefully received.

Thanks,
Sadie

I don't suppose it would be that molluscum virus?  It's harmless if it is.. have a look here...

Do the spots look like these ones?

My mum gets spots similar to your description as a response to an allergy she has with washing powder. Maybe they are sensitive to something?

Hi,
have you got pets? Or have the kids contact with any fury animals? Thinking of flea bites. We had this problem a few mth ago when we got a new dog- always had one, but never any problems till the new very hairy pup arrived. All sorted now!

Thanks for your info guys.
I've just looked up Molluscum and the boys spots are more red with much less white and not so raised so don't think it's that - thanks for the link.
I did use vanish pre wash with some of the kids clothes last week and also washed my whites with Ariel excel gel before washing the clothes again in the normal fairy (youngest has eczema) I guess that could have aggravated there skin???
We don't have pets or have had pets in the house , so don't think it's flea bits and I've just looked up bed bugs (again!) and don't think the spots look like typical bed bug bites either.

Hello Sadie

Thanks for your question

I am sorry to hear you are struggling with a rash of unknown cause, this must be very frustrating for you

I am sure others will continue to share their experiences with you which hopefully will help

Without seeing the rash ourselves it is not possible to be overly helpful as with a rash it is far better if it is 'seen' to be as accurate as possible.

It could be a post viral rash, or an allergic reaction to something?

It is appearing in different parts of the body which could suggest it is coming from 'Contact' from something?

can you think if you have maybe cleaned the carpets? used a vanish spray? that you may have forgotten about?

My son had something similar to what you're describing and it turned out to be something called impetigo. Nasty looking but not serious - treated with cream.

I seem to remember it is infectious which would explain why other son has had it too.

No disrespect to your doctor, but I'd say maybe see a different doctor for a second opinion if this is worrying you??

Hi My son has had exactly the same but just on his tummy - non itchy but looked similar to chicken pox . doctor said it was either a reaction to a virus ( hed had tonsillitis the previous month ) or allergic excema . He gave me some antibiotic cream but he then got a rash from this . The doctor suggested I stop using fabric softner completely and put the wash on an extra rinse cycle . His spots have now all gone but not 100% sure if it was stopping the fabric softner etc or just cleared up by itself.
If you havent done so already I would stop the fabric softner etc and if this doesnt work I would be asking my doc to refer my son to a dermatologist x

bit of a long shot, but check for bed bugs, especially as you said they look like bites.

If you think its coming from the clothes then, try Lakeland wash balls as don't need fabric softener with them. sorry don't know what the spots are!

Both boys are still getting new spots/rash now more than 14 days since the first spot. I've attached a couple of photos to see what people think. All views very welcome! Boys have been quite well in themselves. No fevers. slight snotty noses but nothing more. They have not been in contact with pets and I'm sure we don't have bed bugs. I had thought it might be a contact dermatitis, but now I'm not convinced. I have studied loads of childhood illness pics online and can't find anything similar.
The pic with just one spot on his tummy is how they start. The pic with most spots on his thigh are mostly older spots that have faded and have been present for about 7-10 days with a couple of redder newer spots which have been present for a couple of days. They are not perfectly clear but you can just about make out the new spots have a red middle with a unbroken pimple/white head in the centre of that and the surrounding area is a lighter shade of red.
Thanks for your time again.
