Hi Kan,

I’m Kayleigh, one of the parent supporters at Netmums. I’ve requested that your thread is moved into our Drop in clinic so we can support you further.

From what you’ve shared, it sounds like you are noticing the meltdowns when your son comes through the door after being outside, is that right? This sounds really hard Kan, from a practical perspective you may need to get in and out of the door multiple times a day and it’s understandable you want to try and make this transition easier for both you and your son.

Coming from an outside environment to the inside can bring a lot of sensory changes, there might be a change in temperature, a new space to take in with different lighting, smells etc. These changes might feel distressing or even painful for your son to process which could trigger a meltdown for him.

Many people with autism will experience meltdowns, but as a parent it can be draining and difficult to know how to help. The National Autistic Society have some guidance on meltdowns here that might be helpful: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/behaviour/meltdowns/all-audiences

Hopefully some of our lovely community members will be along soon to share their own experiences and advice. We also have a board here for Autistic Children which may be helpful to have look through: https://www.netmums.com/coffeehouse/special-needs-and-disabilities/children-autism-1169/

Wishing you all the best,

Kayleigh

Hi Kan,

We've moved your thread to our Drop in clinic-Child mental health board, as we think it's a more appropriate place for this topic and you’re more likely to get responses here.
