Hey everyone, Netmums moderator Chelle here, just jumping in to add a link to some official info...

According to Healthline: "A typical 2-year-old can say about 50 words and speak in two- and three-word sentences. By age 3, their vocabulary increases to about 1,000 words, and they’re speaking in three- and four-word sentences.

If your toddler hasn’t met those milestones, they may have a speech delay . Developmental milestones help gauge your child’s progress, but they’re just general guidelines. Children develop at their own rate.

If your child has a speech delay, it doesn’t always mean something is wrong . You may simply have a late bloomer who’ll be talking your ear off in no time. A speech delay can also be due to hearing loss or underlying neurological or developmental disorders."

https://www.healthline.com/health/speech-delay-3-year-old-2

The NHS says: "If you're worried about your child's speech or language development, talk to your GP or health visitor . If necessary, they will refer your child to your local speech and language therapy department."

I can understatnd how you must be at your witts end.  My daughter is very slow with her speech, and has only recently started saying words (she is 3 years).  Last year I told my HV and GP about my concerns, and they refferred her to a speech therapist, and I increased her days in day nursery and she has really come along with her speech since then.  There was a time when the HV thought that my daughter could have hearing problems, and we had her hearing tested, which turned out to be fine.  You should contact your GP and HV and tell them about it, Yes, all children talk at different times, but you should see what they suggest, maybe hearing test, or speech therapy.
All the best

Hes actually saying no words at all...or does he mispronounce words, say one word...anything?

My son is 3 mid-august and up until a month ago I was so worried as all he would say were things like bye-bye, hello, milk, wasnt putting any sentences together or telling me what he wanted.

Since then he has started saying juice, water, milk (more clearly), hello, bye, seeya, oh loads really! lol. He also puts 2 words sentences together ("bye-bye roary" or "get down"), can count up to ten -(then thirteen, fourteen, sixteen and twenty), backwards from 8 and Ive just started teaching him french numbers Oh and hes picked up some colours literally this week.

My parents took him on holiday for 5 days last weekand hes even talking more since then, so maybe getting your LO into nursery or even a toddler group might help bring on ther talking a bit?

Oh and as for potty training - my boy is now kind of trained; if he doesnt have a nappy on he will go on the potty, and I started that before he was really talking. He wasnt telling me he wanted to go toilet or anything, but one day I got the potty, explained that if he needed a poo or wee he had to use it, and he got it within a day.

So maybe try your LO with the potty training? He might pick it up even though hes not talking yet.

Hi all, I’m in this position with my son he’s two and a half and not talking although he started saying a few words at 13 months he slowly started dropping his words, he only says “bye” now and it’s been this way for some time. I’m absolutely drowning in worry. There doesn’t seem to be much support out there from therapists or gps and huge delays from the pandemic. We are on the waiting list for a speech therapist. Any updates on your little ones?

Hi Jennifer and Katie!

I'm in a similar position to you both. My boy just turned two.

I have managed to get SALT but they said they have no concerns because of his age but will speak to me again in Sept. ENT appointment in a few weeks time.

My issue isn't the lack of talking. Its the lack of understanding.

My son has ear issues constantly.

I only got SALT so early because I happened to be talking to someone who was seeing a SALT person that day.

Hi Laura, sorry to hear your going through the same thing. That’s great news you have a SALT appointment. It’s so hard when we are advised to wait it out when we know deep down something isn’t quite right. It’s reassuring though that It could be something to do with his ears other then not understanding? I’m super concerned for my boys understanding to 😞

Absolutely! I know your boy is older but ill be happy to share with you what the SALT emailed me after our chat. (Phone appointment only).

Does your son respond to noise ?

My son doesn't, even less so with background noise about, yet have been told his ears are fine by audiology thats why we are going to ENT soon.

Oh that would be so helpful, thank you. I did see a private speech therapist when my son was 26 months, she wasn’t helpful at all just pointed out he was moderately delayed with his speech and understanding. I didn’t continue with any therapy as she wanted to do it via video, I decided to wait for the NHS. He does respond to sounds, not always his name though. He will randomly do something I’m discussing with my husband that makes me think he hears and understands but when I ask him to follow out very simple tasks on a daily basis he just looks at me blankly.

Did she not say why he could be delayed at all?

No not at all, I had been pinning my hopes on getting the magic answer but all she said was “children are delayed for many different reasons, some children will never learn to talk”. And if I wanted the answers I should book a paediatric assessment which You can only get after being referred by the NHS SALT team as advised by the Heath visitor. So it was pretty disappointing and a waste of time, fingers crossed we both have a better experience with the NHS

Thats frustrating. I'm waiting for that magic answer too. I'm hoping its relating to ENT
