Hi Netmums!!!

PLEASE HELP!

I found out on Monday that I am pregnant and am approx 20 days DPO (almost 5 weeks). This will be my first so needless to say I am a bit clueless and scared- so please don't judge!

I have been vaping for about 6 years on 16mg (very high!) and was a heavy smoker for approx. 4 years before that. I am a self-confessed nicotine addict and am having an incredibly difficult time giving up.

Before lockdown I was on a 12 week stop smoking programme through my local pharmacy and did really well on patches, gum and spray, but ended up vaping again within the first few weeks of lockdown. I have read so many articles about how damaging nicotine is to a developing fetus so the first thing I did was buy a 0mg liquid to try and wean myself off vaping as quickly as possible - I know vaping at all is still not advised, but some articles say NRT products are even worse?

As expected the 0mg is doing nothing for me and I can't seem to function, focus or get any work done, but I don't feel I can risk having any nicotine whatsoever or it could damage my babys development!

I feel so guilty and stressed to be vaping even the 0mg, so thought I'd see what other mums-to-be have done in my situation. My partner seems to think that slowly cutting down mgs over the next few weeks is the way to go, but I'd never forgive myself if something was wrong with the baby because I couldnt just go cold turkey.

As I say this is my first ever pregnancy so please don't judge! Would just love to hear other peoples opinions and advice!

Thanks in advance!
Sarah

Hi Sarah

It’s my first too, I’m 9weeks and was also quite a heavy vaper. I stopped cold turkey but it was really hard. However I was on lesser mg than you. I think you are more likely to cause issues to your pregnancy by extreme stress of going cold turkey. If you can have a plan to reduce the amount you are vaping over the coming 4 weeks, I think this will help.

However, when you have the book in appointment with your midwife they will discuss all this with you and can put you on NR plans free of charge etc. Please don’t worry yourself sick over it, as long as you are taking steps to sort the issue, surely it’s better than ignoring it xx

I was a smoker for 15 years, 20/30 a day. I stopped the day I found out I was pregnant I focused all that energy of not wanting to harm the baby into not smoking, every time I had a craving I thought about my baby, about how much I wanted baby and how much I wanted a healthy baby and for me to be healthy for my baby, it worked for me (I had been I successfully trying to quit for 5 years ish prior to pregnancy but my daughter was the motivation I needed to stop and stay stopped- 4.5 years later haven’t had one since). You can do this!!!! Believe in yourself, bin your vape and all the stuff.

Tough words but you need them.

You are a grown woman carrying a helpless vulnerable baby. Pull your socks up and kick that trash habit to the curb. If you wouldn’t blow smoke into a baby’s face, why is smoking while pregnant not off limits too?

When I discovered I was pregnant after a weekend of heavy drinking and smoking, I decided I should cut down my smoking to one a day until the rest of the packet were gone. In my defence, I had given up drink and ciggies because we were trying for a baby but a negative pregnancy test had thrown me into a spin and as we were away that weekend, I'd thrown caution to the wind. When I started to feel pregnant still, I took another test and it was positive. I figured that one a day wouldn't be terrible after all I'd already done. Two days later I started to bleed. The guilt was horrendous even though the pregnancy continued (I'd thrown the packet of cigarettes away whilst waiting for the ambulance and bargained with God!) and when the baby went into the ICU straight after birth, I was beside myself. If you continue and anything goes wrong, you will feel terrible and wonder if you were to blame even if you weren't. Give you and your baby the best chances. Try to look online for relaxation techniques, distraction techniques, etc. This feeling won't last long and your lungs can start to feel healthy again. Your baby will thank you for it.

Normally every area will have a stop smoking midwife, so I would find out who you're booking in with pick up the phone as ask re. Stop smoking midwife before your booking appointment as this will not be until 10-12 weeks.
Consider this good motivation to stop.

As for continue vaping if doesn't make you ill... Silly suggestion as nobody knows the effect of vaping yet on baby, as it hasn't been around long enough.

Best of luck to stop!

Ok no judgements here with my first I did smoke a few but made me feel sick with second and third I smoked the whole way through and this is no 4 I had no intentions of stopping (just being honest) I struggled so much the first time round trying to stop that it just wasn’t something I was going to try again so then with this pregnancy I read a book by Allan Carr not the comidian but it’s called the easy way to stop smoking I became hooked on the book I finished it in two days I read it thinking there’s no way you will change my mind as you smile while reading and in 2 days it changed my life I’d smoked for 10 years! I haven’t touched a cig or nicotine replacement in 14 weeks and will never go back please read the book even if it’s to prove me wrong! Xxx

As said above. Get the Allan Carr book. I had be smoking 20 a day for 10+ yrs when I found out I was pregnant.
Same here- read the book in 2 days straight.
Do as it says and vape/smoke as requested.
It really works. I gave up after 2 days and havent smoked for 8yrs now. Such a good book, that I gave up with my partner still smoking. He was so shocked he read it too and also gave up no problems.
Dont ask me how it just works.
Well worth 2 days reading to know you are doing all you can to have a healthy and safe pregnancy.
If not talk to your midwife and they will help you but really try the book them you won't need any nicotine going into you or baby.
Good luck and hope you have a great pregnacy and healthy baby.x

Hey Sarah,

How are you coping now?
I'm the same as you been vaping for a long time now and smoked prior to this.
Found out I was pregnant and switched to 0mg juice straight away.
The 0mg does absolutely nothing but still feel like I need it for the habbit.
My partner vapes and I've been having abit of his throughout the day.
I just thought its such a stressful time with feeling unwell and hormones all over the place, vaping is the only thing calming me down.
Sometimes I fill my tank up with 3/4 0mg and -1/4 6mg and this helps but I just feel guilty everytime.
I think the pressure is so hard, if you have any advice I would appreciate it.

Hope you're well

Xxx

Woah! A huge thank you to everyone who commented on my post!!! I've really apprecoated everybodies thoughts! I'm proud to say that the Monday after posting this (29th) I went cold turkey, and haven't touched nicotine since! I bagged up all my vapes, spare parts and oils and chucked them in the bin, as I knew I'd REALLY STRUGGLE with them in the house! Don't get me wrong it has been incredibly hard, and my poor OH has had to suffer through my hormonal, nicotine withdrawn mood swings. But I had to do this for myself and most importantly the baby. I never thought I could do this but its getting much easier now, so for anyone who was in my situation (a complete nicotine addict) YOU CAN DEFINITELY DO IT.

So proud of you quitting, but I agree about the book!! I put it off for ages and when I found out I was pregnant I just pulled my socks up and read it! Husband and friends still smoke, ended up going through mmc and still never smoked. Dont know HOW it worked but it did and its amazing!! If youre even struggling now I would suggest reading it even though youve quit. It will change your life!! Xxx
