Hi all, I am new to this board but have been reading posts regarding silent reflux and thought I would share my story so far and how frustrating and hard it is with a baby with silent reflux!!!
My lovely LO is 8 weeks old and has been suffering with silent reflux since he was about 2 weeks old or possibly since birth.
His symptoms are:
Comfort feeding wanting milk all the time I was breastfeeding but I changed to formula as he wanting feeding all the time I thought I wasn’t giving him enough but turned out I was wrong and he was comfort feeding.
He is fine when I feed him but after a feed he gets uncomfortable cries and moans and grunts.

Very restless sleeper contastly moves, groans and grunts, snorts, gags, makes funny screwed up faces, cries all whilst he’s sleeping, he also finds it difficult to wake up where he is so tired.

He has unsettled periods throughout the day where he arches his back and cries in pain and nothing settles him eventually walking around with him or bouncing him will soothe him.

He coughs, sneezes and gets hiccups frequently especially when laying down on his back

He hates being put down wants to be held upright all the time, he doesn’t like any bouncy chair or anything he will tolerate them for around 5/10 mins but then screams again.

Constantly hear him re-swallowing.

He hates being winded he arches his back and screams, I found walking him around upright rubbing and patting his back helps take his mind of it

He is sometimes sick but only small amounts like normal babies.

He won’t sleep in his cot, only way to get some sleep is him sleeping on my tummy or on his side but with my arm under his head. Me and my partner take it in turns overnight

Another strange thing I notice is that sometimes his face comes over patchy red or he looks flushed??? I’m not sure what causes this, he hasn’t been crying or anything before this happens

At 3 weeks we was prescribed Gaviscon but it made him worst he screamed even more, we stopped that and got prescribed ranitidine, which has helped a little but not enough, Doctors are useless telling me there is nothing more they can do and just give me a leaflet about reflux, I’ve had enough my baby is suffering and in pain I’ve spoken to my health visitor who has said I should demand a referral so tomorrow I am going to Doctors to do that.
Last time at the doctors I mentioned cows milk allergy and she said it can’t be that as he would have bad eczema, I’m still not convinced though as research suggests it could be that. I’m getting fobbed off as I’m a first time mum and they think I’m being over the top.

Another frustrating thing is other people not understanding I’m constantly being told by family members that ur making a rod for your own back carrying him all the time and letting him sleep on you, they say I should let him cry it out, trust me if I did that my babies reflux would be terrible as crying makes it worst, Christmas Eve he was so unsettled cried for over and hour and I heard him re-swalllow 17 times in 20 minutes. Also family members saying give him some baby rice or increase his feed, my LO has 4oz every 3 hours and he weight 9lbs 6, he’s having more than he should and he would easily drink 6-7oz if I let him. I wish they could understand.

I’ve elevated his cot, keep him upright at least  30 mins after a feed, wind regularly, I’ve tired feeding little and often, I’ve changed mills, tried anti reflux but made him constipated, changed to comfort milk which has helped but now his poos were green but now yellow but they smell horrible really eggy he is also very windy but then he always has been. Not sure whether to change milks again.

Here’s my story so far hopefully can help other people that are going through this and also happy to hear other stories or other things I could try, I feel like such a useless mum even though I’m trying my best

Hi Amy-Louise

Thank you for sharing your story it seems like you have had a difficult few months with your LO.

Silent reflux and infant reflux can be a very frustrating time for parents. It can take a long time to find the best and most effective medication for your baby.

I am sure your story will help other parents coping with babies suffering with reflux

Many Thanks Christina.

I could’ve written this, my 11 week old has been on gaviscon & ranitidine & is now on neocate formal for poss cows milk allergy although that hasn’t been confirmed. He’s worse at night & is constantly grunting & struggling to breath. I’m lucky I have private healthcare & access to a great Pediatrician, but we still haven’t got to the bottom of things. My advice would be skip the gp & get up to a&e to see a Pediatrician. Next step really is omeprazole, but it’s rubbish that all babies with cows milk protein allergies have eczema- my lb had Bad cradle cap, within a week of being on neocate it’s completely gone which tells me something, feel free to message me if you’d like to chat x

I know exactly what you are all going through. I had my 3rd baby 5 weeks ago. Like her big brother who is 5, she has silent reflux. I think it's mild compared to what my son had (exactly as you described) but  she's not on any medication just yet, just carobel in her milk. I also add dentinox and alternate with gripe water.

Unlike her brother, she sleeps. Most nights she wakes just for one feed, which is amazing compared to my son who has only just started sleeping through! She has a Sleepyhead which I think helps.

I wonder sometimes if she has a milk allergy too, as her clear skin has now broken out in spots.

One thing I've done is take her to see an osteopath. He said her diaphragm was tight and the back of her neck was restricted too.. I fed her not long after the appointment and she fed brilliantly, brought her wind up and was calm afterwards. She  also had the biggest dirty nappy, and hadn't done one for 2 days!! That night she slept through for the second time in 5 weeks.

If your baby had a traumatic entrance into the world its something to consider. She was overdue, induced and born back to back. She delivered quite quickly too. My son was very similar too. My eldest wasn't a quick labour and had no issues like these two. All three had a tongue tie, all were released.

I found that it's trial and error with everything. You have to give so many weeks with things to try before knowing if it works, then you  might try something else and do the same and never know what to do for the best.. And before you know it, they have grown out of it.

My son was better when he was mobile around during 6 months, and grew out of his silent reflux by around 10m. He continued a dairy free diet till 16 months. We had a fantastic gp and paediatrician, but it worked both ways. They both said i was sensible and because I'd researched into everything, they said I'd done the work for them 😄 and would prescribe what i would ask for. Nutramigem and Omeprazole were what helped the most.

Sorry for long post. Just wanted to share my two experiences.

Message me if you want to chat more x

Please try probiotics. My son had all these things and I thought it was reflux. After a LOT of research I decided to try probiotic in his milk. I cannot tell you how much this changed both of our lives! He was on antibiotics when he was born and I think it killed all his good gut bacteria. So this helped loads. It's also natural so if it doesn't work, it makes no difference. I wish someone had told me about it sooner. Hope it helps someone x

My LO suffered with really bad reflux and it took a trip up to A&E for anyone to really do anything.

She was prescribed Gaviscon, which just made her more sick so was moved onto Ranitidine. She was EBF so I followed a dairy free diet, which helped loads. That’s rubbish about the skin reaction. If you research it there’s actually two types of reaction, a skin reaction and a gut reaction. My LO has a gut reaction. We’ve recently moved her on to Aptimal Pepti 1 (apparently Neocate doesn’t taste nice) and it’s been a massive change. She’s now being seen by both an allergist and a dietician ready for weaning at 6 months.

It feels like it’s never going to end at the beginning, it does take a lot of perseverance with Drs to get the right help.

I also recommend the probiotics. My LO sounds exactly like yours, he's 10 weeks now and so so much better. I can't pinpoint exactly what changed him as at the same time GP prescribed aptamil Pepti and I started probiotics. Did you have antibiotics during labour or baby have them? My LO had antibiotics when he was born and I was told to try probiotics to balance it out

I think we used them for about a month and then dropped it to every other day. Has it been helping?

I'm not sure what's helped as I started these at the same time as putting him on cows milk free formula but either one (or even both together) has settled him down.

My daughter has dentinox colic drops with her feeds, they help a lot as when I've skipped it she has really bad reactions. Could we continue using these with the probiotics?

I'm also due to see gp later, I'm going to ask for hydrolysed milk, as I'm convinced she has a milk allergy, which would you try first, probiotics or the milk? X
