How did you know you were in labour

Hey,

I was just wondering how people knew they were in labour ? And how long between that moment of realisation and the baby arriving ?

My husband is a lorry driver, and he's so worried about missing the birth because he would have to get back to the yard and then our hospital is an hour away from there..

I know nothing is guaranteed, but I am trying to say that odds wise, I'm more likely to go in to labour while he's home because in a week, the absolute worst case scenario, he can be at work for 75 hours out of the 168 hours in a week.. But I don't think that has ever happened to be honest...

Just hearing people timelines would be really helpful to me, regardless of whether they back up my odds or not lol.. xxx

Hi, I'm not sure how helpful my situation will be but my waters broke at 8 PM and my boy was born 3:55 AM the following morning. I knew labour was imminent as my waters broke but was only really experiencing back pain. I didn't go to the hospital until really late as didn't realise these were proper contractions so we only had an hour once we got to the hospital which was basically me pushing and then he was born! If your waters break then you will be induced 24 hours after if you haven't gone into labour anyway so this would be a good time for you to get hubby to come home

That's really helpful actually ! So you didn't have any warning before your waters went at all ?

To know that I wouldn't have to go to hospital straight away if my waters broke is handy to know.. Ideally, if I go in to labour while he's at work, I would like to be able to hold out until he got home then he can take me to hospital.. xxx

Don't know if mine will be abit different as my LO was a little breechling.

Had severe back pain all day the Monday and crashed to sleep at 8pm. Woke 4am Tuesday with mild pain that felt like period pain, this carried on all day Tuesday and my waters went at 4pm. Labour stopped at 9pm, started again at 6am and LO was born at 11:55am. Labour recorded as 5hrs 55.

I panicked about OH not being there, but it all works out, just make sure he always has his phone on him on loud xxx

My waters broke, funnily enough on the only night I wasn't bothered about speeding up to labour! I went to have my pad checked and they confirmed (this was 9pm) I decided to go home but by 12am I was back on at hospital to be told I was 9cm dilated. I felt the sensation to push as soon as I got in the pool really (I wanted pain relief but was too far gone so against my wishes I had the pool) but I couldn't bare to push the head out so poor lass wasn't born until 4am haha! We were home by tea time the same day! Xx

I didn't realise I was in labour. I woke up at 0120 with stomach pain. The pain was continuous so I thought I had a stomach bug. An hour later I realised it was labour as the pain was coming and going less than 2 minutes apart now. Got examined at hospital at 3am and was 8cm and he was born at 0501 (first baby). So was quite quick- only 2.5 hours from realising it was labour lol. Hence why I'm planning a homebirth this time lol x

I lost my plug that morning but I know people that lose theirs weeks before so didn't think anything of it. Felt completely normal other than that (we'd actually spent the day finishing decorating the nursery lol)

I was asked to go in so they could confirm it was definitely my waters but then got sent home until something started happening. Is your nearest hospital an hour away or just the one you'd like to give birth in? The reason I ask is we have one 10 mins away and that's where I went to confirm it was my waters but I actually gave birth in another hospital around 45 minutes away as that was my preferred choice.

We have a hospital about 15 minutes away from home, but it's classed a different district (I think that's the word) to my preferred hospital... I would just worry if I went to that hospital and I was already dilated that they'd make me stay there ? xxx

I don't think the local hospital would make you stay there if you didn't want to. Hope it all goes well [emoji4]

Mine was similar to this, having back pain throughout the night which I didn't think for a second was labour. The next morning hadn't felt baby move much so went to hospital to be checked. They put me on a monitor for 3 hours at 11.30 ish. Was examined after that and was 9cm. Over to delivery room and baby was born at 16.18.

Did you know you were in labour while you were being monitored ?

I'm keeping a mental note of all these things that may be labour so I can try and catch it asap haha... xxx

I had to go straight in because there was meconium in my waters, and then they sped the labour up with the drip, so im not actually sure when I would have gone in to hospital otherwise, or how long it would have taken without  the drip! Xx
