If you fancy spicing things up between the sheets, look no further than these Kamasutra (or Kama Sutra) sex positions. From doggy style to rocking horse, Catherine wheels to triangles, there are 100 sex positions to try.

What is the Kamasutra?

The Kama Sutra is an Indian Hindu text that dates from the 2nd century, originally written in Sanskrit, about erotic love. It's written by ancient philosopher Vātsyāyana Mallanga.

While it might be known to many people as a source of sexual positions, it's also a philosophical work that covers a lot more topics, including advice on love, relationships, family life, nature and the art of living well. The Kama Sutra is divided into 7 books, each dealing with a different aspect of life, love and sexuality.

There is guidance about finding a life partner, ways of courting a woman for marriage along with some concepts that modern couples might find very out of date, including duties expected of wives (cooking, cleaning, etc) and the use of courtesans to build sexual confidence before marriage.

In Western culture, we know about the Kama Sutra primarily because of the British explorer Richard Francis Burton, who published a translation of the work from his journeys in the late 19th century.

What are the most popular sexual positions in the Kamasutra?

One of the enduring appeals of the Kamasutra is that is goes beyond the usual missionary or doggy style positions and provides guidance on how to embrace, where each partner stands, sits or lies, where to put or pull legs, knees, chest and arms. It also advises which positions are best for giving and receiving pleasure for the man or the woman and which positions leave the hands free (potentially for the use of sex toys) or allow for deep penetration.

Does the Kamasutra work?

There's a reason why this ancient text has endured as a source for erotic pleasure for centuries. Something as simple as changing where you place your legs or your partner's bum can add excitement to your sex life and hit pleasure points you didn't even know existed!

You don't have to contort yourself into an acrobat either.

From the surprisingly simple to the more advanced, you'll find sex positions that inject some variety into your erotic life ... as well as have fun trying them.

Problems with sex?

If you find you are having problems in your relationship with sex and intimacy that are causing problems or distress, it's a good idea to speak to your GP or even see a certified sex therapist . Sex therapists are qualified counsellors, doctors or other health professionals who have received special training to help people deal with problems in their sexual relationships.
